YOUNG people taking part in Waverley's annual Inter Town Sports Competition will no longer receive their prizes from sports stars.
Waverley councillors have voted to to stop the star appearances to save £1,000 a year.
Sporting celebrities including Alan Ball, Trevor Brooking, Roger Black, Duncan Goodhew, Tessa Sanderson and Jet from TV's Gladiators have all handed out awards at the annual tournament which sees Farnham, Haslemere, Godalming and Cranleigh do sporting battle.
But the ruling Conservative administration's budget meant having to trim £8,000 from leisure spending.
Speaking at Waverley's full council meeting on Tuesday, David Munro (Conservative, Farnham Bourne) said: "We never pretended some cuts were not going to be painful, but this money could be better spent. The Inter-Town Sports competition is not about celebrities but about playing sports competitively but with good humour."
One of Waverley's two Labour councillors, Danny Denningberg (Godalming North East and South West) led a move to vote down the motion, attracting wide support from Liberal Democrats, but failed by just two votes.
Speaking of his disappointment about the move, John Savage (Liberal Democrat, Cranleigh East) said: "I think it's a brilliant idea to have a well-known sports personality and find it really inspiring to meet people of such importance who inspire so many people."
