AN elderly man missing in the Camelsdale area for more than a week has still not been found, despite an extensive police search.

Eric Mitchell (79), who suffers from senile dementia, went missing last Sunday evening after he was believed to have wandered off from the Rosemary Park Nursing Home in Marley Heights.

A week after he went missing, police set up checkpoints in Camelsdale and Hammer Lane between 7 and 11 pm to ask motorists if they had seen anything.

Acting inspector of Midhurst police station Brian Bracher said: "We had a few leads from the checks, but those didn't become anything."

The search for Mr Mitchell involved helicopters from Surrey and Sussex police andmore than 70 Sussex officers.

Although the operation has been scaled down since last Thursday, Insp Bracher said possible sightings of Mr Mitchell are being followed up.

"It's more a case now of following sightings and continuing to ask people out walking their dogs to let us know if they see anything."

Mr Bracher added that police were in regular contact with Mr Mitchell's family.

Mr Mitchell is described as 5ft 7 ins tall and with grey hair. He is said to look younger than his years and may appear to walk with a stagger.

He left the nursing home without his glasses and was not wearing his top set of dentures. He was wearing a mid-blue shirt, grey trousers and brown shoes.

Anyone with any information or who sees a person fitting Mr Mitchell's description should contact Sussex police on 0845 60 70 999.
