ANY hopes that a tunnel to ease the congestion at the A3 crossroads in Hindhead was in line for government funding have been dashed following the unveiling of the new 10-year transport plans last week.

Although the government's £180 billion plan, entitled Transport 2010, pledges to provide the funding to implement the outcome of the study currently being carried out into the notorious bottleneck, it makes no definite commitment to cover the cost of the £80m tunnel which many see as the only solution to the congestion.
