BEACON Hill dazzled on Sunday with a “fabulous village event celebrated in true British style” to mark the Queen’s 90th.

A special joint service was held in the morning held at St Alban’s Church and the Reverend Richard Bodle launched the festivities at 3pm, when residents celebrated by mounting a big street party with the support of local businesses and Haslemere Town Council.

Organiser Brian Walsh said. “The street looked truly festive and in keeping with the rest of the country’s street parties, with bunting criss-crossing the road, lines of tables decorated with Union Jack flags and red, white and blue balloons. After a sticky start and debates about which way the weather pattern was moving at 2pm, the decision was made to go ahead rather than relocate to the Royal British Legion.

“Then the heavens opened, but we had gone past the point of no return and all we could do was hope. In the event, despite a few spots of rain, the day was warm and the party was thoroughly enjoyed by more than 350 residents, with the enthusiastic consumption of Pimm’s, tea cakes and ice creams.

“A loud and enthusiastic rendition of the national anthem was followed by some marvellous 30s swing classics from the Bevin Boys.” nMore pictures on p6&7.
