A history enthusiast who dedicated more than 30 years to researching Richard III and medieval history has been honoured posthumously for his contribution to the Richard III Society.

Rollo Crookshank, who lived in Farnham for many years and died earlier this year aged 67, received the society’s 2026 Robert Hamblin Award for Exceptional Service in recognition of his longstanding commitment.

Members of the Surrey Group, which he founded in 2000, said they were delighted by the award, which recognises significant long-term service. Presented annually, it is understood to be the first awarded posthumously.

Jan Frankcom, the group’s secretary and treasurer, remembered Mr Crookshank as a friendly, industrious and knowledgeable man whose passion for history was matched by his generosity.

“He was a very kind man and a hardworking one,” she said.

Mr Crookshank helped organise meetings, guest speakers and excursions, sharing his knowledge and contacts with academic authors and historians. His interests included Richard III, the Yorkist period and the Wars of the Roses.

The society encourages a balanced understanding of Richard III, whose reputation was heavily influenced by Tudor accounts and Shakespeare’s portrayal. Mr Crookshank’s approach was rooted in research and evidence rather than assumptions.

He was also remembered for looking out for others, regularly offering fellow members lifts to meetings so everyone could participate.

Mr Crookshank enjoyed a long career in London's book distribution industry and had only recently retired before becoming seriously ill. His death was a tremendous loss to the Surrey Group, which continues to celebrate his legacy.

Jan said members felt the award was thoroughly deserved, although Rollo himself might have been embarrassed by the recognition.
