Liphook recorded their first win in the series of timed matches in the Southern Premier League, beating Hungerford by a massive 124 runs at Ripsley Park on Saturday.

Steve Riley was at his belligerent best for Liphook and raced to 69 before being second man out at 102.

All the batsmen made useful contributions as Liphook built an unassailable total.

New Zealander Ben Jansen, was the linchpin of the innings with 80. Jeremy Bulled made 32 and then Michael Smyth came in to play just the sort of innings that was required.

He weighed in with 65 not out from 65 balls, demoralising the visiting bowlers in the blistering Ripsley heat.

Nick Gay chipped in with 20 and Liphook finally amassed 289-5 from 66 overs.

The visitors from Berkshire included Hampshire player Jason Laney, but failed to get anywhere near the distant target, even though Liphook lost the reliable Tim Wheatley with a groin injury after he had bowled just five overs.

The pacy Gay dismissed both openers and when young Chris Wright claimed the valuable scalp of Laney, caught behind by Andy Brown for 57, the home team sensed victory.

The spinners, Alan Crawford, Duncan Berry and Jansen then worked their way through the middle and late order.

But it was a close call. Hungerford were only four balls from forcing a draw when Jansen trapped the last man leg before to finish with 3 for 32 from 15.2 overs. Not a bad day's work for the Wellington all-rounder.
