GUESTS were treated to a free traditional Christmas Day lunch at Haslewey Community Centre.

The annual event – organeised by the Haslemere Churches Together group – has taken place for the last 17 years

Mayor Melanie Odell welcomed everyone and Rev Clare Shepherd, St Stephen’s curate, said a prayer before lunch was served.

Organiser Jo Long said: “A big ‘thank-you’ goes to the many volunteers from local churches and the community who gave up their Christmas Day to serve local people who would otherwise have spent Christmas Day alone.

“Special thanks to Maura Howard for cooking and organising a fantastic team in the kitchen, Roger and Maggie Grimshaw for organising the transport for the guests and Michael Bawtree for leading a group of carol singers.

“They are all members of St Stephen’s.”

The food was supplied by Farncombe Fresh Foods and each guest took home a goody bag containing sweets donated by members of St Peter’s, Lynchmere and St Paul’s, Camelsdale, a slice of cake made by Mr and Mrs Goldburn.

It also contaiend a mince pie donated by Abel and Cole, a miniature bottle of port and a cyclamen supplied by Haslemere Garden Centre. Hoppa Community Service and AMK provided minibuses and drivers. Waitrose and The Shottermill Great War Memorial Trust were generous with financial support.

“Without the support and help of so many people this event could not happen,” added Jo, who has organised the lunch for the last two years.
