ALTON Lions president Michael Gwynne paid a visit to Avenue Nurseries in Lasham to pick up a cheque for £1,987.30 from owner Peter Osgood as the proceeds from the store’s Christmas fundraising activities.

According to Mr Osgood, every Christmas Avenue Nurseries raises money for a different charity and this time it was the Lions Club of Alton, which supports good causes in and around the town.

On this occasion, the Lions will use some of the funds raised to provide a prostate cancer testing session later in the year.

In explaining his generous Christmas offering, Mr Osgood said: “Santa Claus visits the nursery on four weekends before Christmas with a free lucky dip for children. Many bring letters with request for presents and chat to Santa by the fireside while adults enjoy a free drink and nibbles.”

In addition, there is a seasonal display with festive activities to amuse customers, and collection boxes throughout the store. A raffle at the staff Christmas party contributes to the final total and this year raised a handsome £317 for the Lions charity.

Mr Osgood expressed grateful thanks to his customers for their generosity in supporting this annual festive activity at Avenue Nurseries and wishes them all a “happy New Year”.
