Sir, – I have made my Millennium New Year wish, and it is that in future all voting for elections shall be by either telephone or terminals in shops and stores.
You just pop down to a terminal put in a swipe card, or pick up a telephone code in your PIN number, cast your vote and "hey presto" it is already counted and the full results are available to be announced almost immediately the polls close.
It appears to be all so easy, but with the track record of government computers, such as those for air traffic control, the prison, immigration, police and probation services and the internal Home Office network of which 13 are running late or experiencing spiralling costs, it could take years to get the results of the polls and for MPs and councillors to be elected to form administrations.
Just think, no new rules, regulations or directives, no promises and lies and most of all no rantings and ravings from those chosen to govern us.
Oh! such bliss, such joy.
