THE old fire station in Bordon High Street was explored by local councillors last week, when they discussed the future of the building.

It is thought that the building will be released from Ministry of Defence (MoD) ownership when the Army leaves the town in 2013. The Edwardian Army fire station is thought to be unique in Britain and it is hoped that the building can be retained for community use.

The Mayor of Bordon and Whitehill, Bill Wain, Dr Chris Wain from the Woolmer Forest Heritage Society and county councillor for Whitehill and Bordon, Adam Carew, met MoD and East Hampshire District Council staff to examine the building's potential in more detail.

Mr Carew said: "Regrettably, there are no major internal Edwardian fixtures and fittings, but the design and most of the layout is certainly of this period.

"This landmark building is in a very good state of repair and could be easily converted for community use.

"I came here as a boy to meet the local fire brigade, but it's much larger than I remembered.

"Whitehill-Bordon needs a real sense of its own history and identity.

"The old fire station would make a great place for exhibitions about our area's amazing past, but also to showcase plans and possibilities about our town's new green future.

"There is a great deal of potential here and the possibilities for its future use are very exciting."

A further meeting of stakeholders will be held in December.
