With Haslemere keen to take their cup form into the league, a match against their old foes seemed to be the ideal opportunity, with Fleet having a run of poor results.

It was nearly all Haslemere for the first 20 minutes, the home side finding it hard to cope with pace of Guy Jones and the skill of Tony Mayson and Guy Marchant, all aided by the multi-talented Duncan Berry and Dan Clarke.

But none of six short corners came to anything and the pressure ended with the inevitable breakaway goal, the ball trickling over the line via the post and the back of Dan Hollyman's helmet.

Haslemere were soon level, however. Ed Rogers this time placed his short-corner flick right in the top corner.

Marchant doubled the tally a few minutes later when it was his turn to convert the short corner with an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner.

Although going into the break one goal to the good, Haslemere knew the game should have been in the bag already, and they needed to put their chances away.

Duncan Hadrell only had one opportunity and took it well to open his account for Haslemere.

This began a period of dominance for Haslemere, producing several close misses, short corners and, most importantly, two more goals, with Rogers and Marchant using the so far unused corners of the goal.

Haslemeres then had their customary poor spell and Fleet pulled one back, thanks to a deflection off Dave Mayson who, up until then, had seemed infallible.

Fleet then tested Hollyman, Will Davenport, Byron Tibbits and Chris Stokes to the full, especially while skipper Stokes was taking a five-minute break in the cooler.

The 10 players held firm and Haslemere secured an important win ahead of this weekend's hectic schedule. They entertain Wimborne in the league on Saturday (1-30 pm) and are home to Petersfield on Sunday in the Hampshire Cup (2-30 pm)
