A COMPROMISE solution hammered out by Waverley to allow Dunsfold Park extra flights during the Olympics may have rendered the plan unworkable.

Responding to more than 70 strong objections triggered by Dunsfold's application for an increase of 1,560 flights from July 21 to August 15, the borough council's joint planning committee opted to steer a "middle course" at last week's meeting.

Councillors voted by 11-2 to refuse permission to increase the cap of 5,000 annual flight movements (ATM) as requested on the grounds that as the airfield had not used its full quota for the last two years with a shortfall of around 1,300, it could therefore accommodate the extra within its allowance.

They also threw out Dunsfold's request to be allowed to fly on Sundays – but agreed flight times could be extended to 7am-9pm on Mondays to Fridays and 7.30am-8pm on Saturdays.
