BUSY mum Victoria Carr took it upon herself to organise a sponsored run around Jubilee Fields in Alton last week – raising more than £800 for the BBC Sport Relief fund in the process.
Her eldest son, Henry, aged five, attends Butts Primary School, so the children were predominantly his classmates, although a few of the youngsters were from other schools in the area.
And there were some siblings to bring the field up to 29 small people, all keen to prove they could run the one-kilometre course – and they did!
Victoria said: “All the families were really enthusiastic and the children seemed to love taking part.”
Around 380 children and adults from Wootey infant and junior schools joined forces last Friday to do their bit for Sport Relief and form possibly the longest conga line ever seen in Alton.
The conga took 40 minutes to cover a distance of one mile, taking in the footpath that runs around the outside of the campus, as well as several laps of the school field boundary and the playground.
According to Wootey Junior School year six teacher Dan Mills, when the next BBC Sport Relief charity fundraising initiative takes place in two years time the aim will be to try to involve more Alton schools, in a bid to try to set a school conga record.
The children also wore sports clothes to school on the day and helped raise around £260 for Sport Relief.
Anstey Junior School children participated in a range of activities in support of the BBC’s Sport Relief initiative.
Last Friday, some children from the school visited RAF Odiham to run a mile on the runway. At the same event, service personnel from the base pulled a Chinook helicopter for a mile.
Children also ran a mile, wearing red, on Monday and raised £140. The course took them around the front field of the school, with teachers and children participating in the run.
Finally, as part of their PE lessons with CM Sports, the children collectively ran 504 miles. CM Sports had agreed to sponsor them for each mile run and donated £77 to Sport Relief in acknowledgement of the children’s efforts.
A pyjama day at Privett Montessori Nursery raised more than £100 for Sport Relief.
All the children sported their colourful pyjamas and dressing gowns throughout the morning. And they started with a healthy breakfast which set them up for all sorts of fun activities.
Lorna Kefe, coach of Petersfield Playball, organised all the games, including an an obstacle course followed by three activities which the children rotated around which involved ball skills and team work.
There was also a treasure hunt followed by parachute games and the children threw all their spare pennies in the Sports Relief buckets.
“It was a unique day and a huge success,” said Kate Pritchard, head of Privett Montessori.
“The children suggested wearing their pyjamas to nursery and they were really excited to take part in the Sport Relief day.”
Moving to larger premises gave the staff of Specialist Waste Recycling in Alton plenty of room to raise money for Sports Relief without leaving the office.
Last Friday they took part in an Easter-themed fundraiser with a sporty programme ranging from an egg hunt to a ‘keepy-uppy’ challenge and from an egg and spoon race, fancy dress competition and egg decorating to The Easter Relief Cake Bake sale, a raffle and a ‘Secret Easter Bunny’ gift exchange.
As well as having a lot of fun, the event raised £185 for the BBC’s Sports Relief appeal.
Since moving to Buckham House, on Lenten Street, in November, the firm has not only increased its staff to 20 but is one the fastest-growing waste management companies in the UK.
Last month, it was recognised on the London Stock Exchange’s 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain, one of only 40 companies to be included for the third consecutive year.
A team of rookies from Alton Runners put their training to the test on Sunday by taking part in the BBC Sport Relief Mile event, organised by Mint Condition at Binsted.
While some of the team successfully completed the three-mile course taking in undulating lanes surrounding the gym, others kept going for a second circuit to run for six miles.
