HASLEMERE marked the first anniversary of the September 11 attacks on America with silent thought and reflection on Wednesday.
A minute's silence was held at 1-46 pm, the exact time the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center's north tower one year ago.
People gathered at the war memorial outside the town hall to remember the thousands who died during the attacks, 67 of whom were British.
Haslemere and Liphook's fire and rescue services remembered in silence their New York colleagues who fought so bravely to save lives at Ground Zero.
Tesco and Somerfield supermarkets also came to a standstill, as did the High Street branch of Boots. Staff at Waverley Borough Council were invited to gather in the main chamber to collect their thoughts.
St Bartholomew's Church in Derby Road held a special service with two minutes' silence at 11 am.
A kneeler, designed by parishioner Christine Elvidge to mark the destruction of the twin towers, was dedicated during the service.
St Bartholomew's Primary School children attended the church in the morning, when the Rector of Haslemere, Rev Norman Jones, led them in thoughts and prayer.
Other schools across the area held special assemblies.
