PLANS for a second mobile phone mast on land at Harrow Field, Steep, could pose a health danger to nearby residents it was claimed this week.

Residents living adjacent to the existing mast in the field say there are a large number of conflicting reports on the dangers of radiation emitted from these stations and until these are resolved, planners should adopt a precautionary approach to the siting of masts.

BT Cellnet has applied to put a 15- metre sectored column, three panel antennae, two 600 mm microwave dishes and associated cabin with landscaping on the site.

A 15-metre mast for mobile phones was erected in Harrow Field in 1999.

Ben and Sarah Browne, who live near the existing mast, are lobbying to raise opposition to the additional mast.

ÒAccording to an independent report commissioned by the government,Ó said Mrs Browne, Òthese masts may be dangerous, particularly to children.

ÒThe government has asked schools not to have masts and some councils including Hampshire County Council have forbidden masts on council land until it is clear exactly what the health risks are.

ÒSteep, Bedales, Dunhurst, Dunannie and Sheet schools are all in the area and the existing mast is close to the Harrow pub, Steep Tennis and Cricket clubs and many of our homes.

ÒUK levels of acceptable microwaves from masts are already much less stringent than many other countries in the world - for example SwitzerlandÕs microwave exposure guidelines are 100 times more stringent than ours.

ÒWe believe these masts are an eyesore and potentially dangerous and are asking anyone who shares our concerns to write to East Hampshire District Council with their views by Monday, October 29.Ó

Mrs Browne understands a third mast is planned for the site and she believes these applications are coming in now in order to avoid any restrictions which may be imposed when the area becomes a national park.

If the application goes to EHDCÕs planning committee it will not be heard before its meeting in December.

Replying to a letter from the Brownes, MP Michael Mates said, ÒThis would seem to be a far from suitable site.Ó

Steep Parish Council has also objected to the application.
