MORE than 40 clubs, societies and organisations have signed up to the Farnham Maltings’ first ever Retirement Refreshers’ Fair on Monday, February 29.

Based on a typical university freshers fair, the event will profile the local clubs and societies on offer which might be of interest to Farnham’s retired people.

These range from various special interest groups such as The Freewheelers Theatre Company and Farnham Geological Society to groups that celebrate nature such as the Aldershot Floral Design Club and Waverley Countryside Volunteers.

The Farnham & District Ramblers and Farnham’s newly formed Walking Basketball group may appeal to those seeking a more active lifestyle, while the University of the Third Age and the Worker’s Educational Association offer a range of courses such as learning a new language or wine tasting.

The fair will also present a range of charities on a local and national scale that are looking for help running a range of projects in the local area.

Farnham ASSIST is a Christian organisation that provides support to older people in Farnham who may have become isolated from friends or family. It arranges a variety of activities such as an afternoon tea with a quiz to help the members socialise and have fun with others in a similar situation.

Another organisation that provides similar support is Care Farnham, a voluntary scheme which aims to provide transport for people to various medical and dental appointments. It is looking for volunteers to fill either driving positions or to man the phone-lines.

Farnham Lions, which runs the annual Beerex festival at the Maltings, also organises various fundraising schemes for those less fortunate while creating an inclusive and enjoyable society along the way.

The Maltings will also feature the range of activities in the Arts & Elders programme which aims at improving physical and mental wellbeing in those aged 65 or more.

A full list of exhibitors can be found online at www.farnhammaltings.com or for more information call the Maltings on 01252 745476. The Retirement Refreshers’ Fair is free to attend, taking place from 10am to 3pm on Monday, February 29.
