MORE than 75 countries and around 2,500 separate locations were registered to take part in World Orienteering Day, and one of these was Waverley Abbey C of E Junior School in Tilford.

The purpose of the day was to get as many young people as possible to take part in orienteering with a view to breaking the Guinness World Record for the total number of participants in one day.

With the Waverley Abbey School site recently being professionally mapped and orienteering introduced to the school curriculum, this was an opportunity not to be missed.

Each class was divided in to small teams which participated throughout the day in trying to complete a number of orienteering courses.

Although the weather was not favourable it did not dampen the spirits of the children who were all very keen to complete their courses within their allotted time slots.

Waverley Abbey was also fortunate to have Sarah Rollins, an Ex-British orienteering champion, visiting on the day who helped inspire and send the pupils on their way.

At the end of the day 442 pupils had participated, all of who looked like they enjoyed being part of an attempted world record.

The school now has to wait and see if the record of 207,979 young people will be broken.
