TREE-felling being carried out by the National Trust as part of a heathland restoration scheme at Hindhead Commons has come under fire from Haslemere residents this week.

One Farnham Lane resident described the work as "over the top" and said it was "obsessive to be cutting down all these trees for heather".

However, Andrew Storey, the National Trust's head warden for Hindhead Commons, said the work was "essential" to ensure the survival of the heathland, which he described as an "internationally rare and important habitat".
