ALTON’S traditional pancake race returns to the Public Gardens next week.

To coincide with half term, registration for the February 16 fun will start at 11am, with races for children and adults, plus team relay races for friends, families, community groups and businesses.

According to the organisers, it promises to be a morning of “flipping good fun” for people of all ages, with fancy dress and blatant advertising encouraged, as well as free hot pancakes, kindly provided by members of the churches in the Greater Alton project.

Organised by Alton Town Council, competitors should note that prizes may not necessarily be awarded for the fastest flipper but “to the person or team who embraces the event to the best of their ability and is a true good sport on the day”.

Faye Bobillier, owner of Alton’s Toy Shed on Cross and Pillory Lane and Sweet Chocolate on Westbrook Walk, has donated the prizes.

Alton mayor Pam Jones will be joined by Reverend David Hinks and Mrs Bobillier on the judging panel and will award prizes to the category winners.

Town councillor Derek Gardner said: “As Shrove Tuesday falls during the school term, this year we have decided to host this event on the following Tuesday during the half-term holiday.

“We are hoping for a good turnout for the town’s traditional pancake race and are grateful to St Lawrence Church and Mrs Bobillier for their support in helping make this event possible.”

Entry forms are available from the town hall, the Alton Herald office on the Market Square, or online at alton.gov.uk. Completed forms, plus a £1 entry fee per person, may be returned to Alton Town Council in advance, or flippers can register in the Public Gardens on the day.

Race participants are asked to bring along their own frying pan but pancakes will be provided.
