COMPETITORS of all ages will be lining up on Tuesday, February 19, for Alton's ninth town centre pancake race. Alton mayor Robyn Fitzer will fire the starting pistol at 1pm to send competitors from the starting line, outside Woolworth's in the High Street, up Cross and Pillory Lane to run a circuit of the Market Square before crossing the finishing line outside the Town Hall. A joint venture by Alton Town Council and Alton Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), the race is sponsored by The Little Grey Cells whose director, Dean-Paul Phillips, will prepare special durable pancakes for the contestants to flip. The event is traditionally held during half-term week to ensure maximum entries and organisers are hoping for a bumper turnout. All you need to take part is fancy dress (optional but fun), a frying pan and your £1 entry fee. Flagrant advertising is welcome. Prizes will be awarded for the best costume (£10) and for the winners and runners-up in two categories – the over-16s will receive £20 for the winner and £10 for the next home, while the under-16s will receive £10 and £5 respectively. Deputy town clerk Greg Burt said: "The judges will be looking not just for the fastest competitor but for the person who manages the most complete pancake flips!" Entry forms are available from Alton Town Hall and Alton Tourist Information Centre in Cross and Pillory Lane or enter on the day. For information call Greg Burt on 01420 83986 or David Gay on 01420 544881.
