HOPES of a new bus shelter for elderly people at Petersfield's Broadway Park are a step closer to reality. It follows support from Petersfield Town Council for the project. Town councillors received letters from two households at Broadway Park, off The Causeway, requesting a bus shelter at the top of the road. There is currently a bus stop, but no shelter. Mr and Mrs Parsons, of Orchard Way, Broadway Park, wrote: "We are new residents of Broadway Park estate and we were amazed to find out that there is no bus shelter at the top of the road, considering that 95 per cent of the residents of Broadway Park are senior citizens we think it would justify a shelter. "As many of us are now receiving free bus passes it makes a lot of sense to have one. We have noticed that there is one at Cranford Road which is hardly used, except by the schoolchildren once a day." A second read: "When it's raining everyone gets soaked before the bus arrives and nine times out of 10 it's late. We finish our journeys wet through." Town council members discussed the request for a new shelter at a finance and general purposes meeting last week. Town council clerk Neil Hitch heard that the existing bus stop was outbound only and any bus shelter would be situated on The Causeway, not in Broadway Park. It was also noted that a bus boarding point was required and that the project was suitable for a transport developer contributions bid. Councillors recommended to support the erection of a bus shelter on The Causeway close to the entrance to Broadway Park and that moving the bus stop to the proposed new shelter be investigated.
