PARKING charges in the four council car parks in Haslemere are to go up from Monday. It follows an announcement by Waverley Borough Council in November the charging period would be reduced by half an hour, so that motorists will only pay until 6.30pm.
Charges go up by 10p for the first hour – and varying amounts after that – following the council’s first pay-and-display increase since 2012. The new prices will affect the High Street, Chestnut Avenue, Tanners Lane and Weydown Road car parks. Season ticket charges will also increase.
The High Street car park will be the most expensive – at 90p for one hour, £1.80 for two hours, £3.10 for three hours – then rising by £1.10 an hour to £10.80 for 10 hours and £11.40 for the full day.
Parking at Chestnut Avenue will be 60p per hour, rising to £6.30 for 10 and a-half-hours.
Tanners Lane will still be the cheapest in the town centre with motorists paying 60p for one hour, £1 for two hours and £4.20 for the rest of the day.
Weydown Road is also 60p for one hour, £1 for two hours, then £5 weekdays and £3 on Saturdays.
An annual permit for parking in the Chestnut Avenue car park is £1,041 – it will cost £925 to park in Weydown Road (Monday-Friday) and £809 at Tanners Lane.
The tariff and timing changes also apply to Waverley car parks in Godalming, Farnham and Cranleigh.
The most expensive places to park for a full day in Waverley will be South Street and Mint Street, Godalming, and Lower Hart, Farnham, when the 10-and a-half-hour charge is £18.70.
The cheapest place is Station Lane, Milford, where the council charges 10p for the first two hours and £1.50 thereafter.
Recommending the changes when WBC considered them last year, councillor Kevin Deanus, responsible for operational services said: “The parking prices haven’t gone up since February 2012 but since then inflation has risen by 7.5 per cent. Even with a tariff increase, Waverley car parks would remain cheaper than many other council car parks, so people would still get an excellent deal.”
But in neighbouring Chichester District, the maximum motorists could pay for eight hours is £2, a rise of 60p per day in the North Street and Grange Road car parks, in Midhurst.
The parking period in the West Sussex town is between 9am-5pm Monday -Saturday.
Chichester District Council (CDC) is considering reducing its free car parking period from two to one hour at North Street and Post Office car parks, while The Grange would continue to be free for up to two hours.
North Street and the Post Office would charge 40p for two hours, rising up to £2 for eight hours, while The Grange would charge 60p for three hours, rising to £2 for eight hours.
CDC is still consulting on proposals, which if agreed after a consultation period – which ends on Wednesday, January 20 – would be introduced in April.
CDC leader Tony Dignum, said: “We want to support our rural retail centres, which is why we have responded to initial comments and made these changes to the proposals.
“The most anyone would pay within our rural car parks would be £2 for eight hours, which is considered to be competitive when compared to other areas along the south coast. We are also proposing to freeze the hourly rates for the next two years.”
Free parking will remain in Fernhurst and Petworth.
