THE year-long free-for-all for motorists parking in supposedly restricted areas on Waverley's streets will be over in a few weeks. New arrangements for the enforcement of on- street parking restrictions by Waverley Council, working as agent for Surrey County Council, is on target to come into force on Monday, April 2. The borough has seen only minimal enforcement since Surrey Police made its two traffic wardens redundant last April. But the change to decriminalised parking enforcement under civil law will see Waverley Council co-ordinating the patrolling and penalty issuing service for its car parks with its new on-street duties, using an external contractor. Parking attendants will be charged with handling more than 50 different on-street parking violations, but just four off-street. According to Surrey County Council, the attendants will initially focus on areas, for example in town centres, where illegal parking increases traffic congestion or has an impact on public safety.
