CONTROVERSIAL plans to impose on-street parking charges in Haslemere caused uproar at a public meeting on Tuesday.
Surrey county councillor Steve Renshaw was bombarded by protests from concerned traders and residents fearful that introducing parking meters, more single and double yellow lines and other parking restrictions could kill off the town.
More than 350 people packed into Haslemere Hall for the public meeting called by the town council "as a matter of urgency" after Surrey County Council published a raft of proposals.
Proposed changes include the introduction of pay-and-display spaces costing £1 per hour in many roads near the railway station and in Weyhill, and for £1 per hour after the first 30 minutes on the High Street and West Street.
