ON February 28, 1979, Sir Edward Tuckwell, a Bart's surgeon whose wife died of cancer, opened a hospice in Farnham in her name.

Twenty-one years later, the Phyllis Tuckwell Memorial Hospice boasts 120 staff treating 400 in-patients a year, most of whom suffer terminal illnesses such as HIV-related conditions, cancer and motor-neurone disease.
