A DEDICATED charity supporter who busked this year’s London Marathon and Farnham Carnival dressed as one of the ‘Fab Four’ has broken the Guinness World Record for “the fastest time around the Monopoly board on foot”.
Alex Radford, from Ash Vale, completed the trail in an impressive one hour, 45 minutes and 35.4 seconds last Sunday - shaving more than 50 minutes off the previous record.
To attempt the record, individuals have to travel to all of the locations found on the original version of the UK edition of Monopoly, in any order. This includes all 22 properties, four railway stations, a prison and a car park.
Strict requirements meant Alex had to film his entire route, take photographs at every location, and travel with two timekeepers and two witnesses.
Alex completed two test runs before the big day to memorise the route, and he enlisted the help of fellow members of Hart Road Runners, Blackwater Valley Runners and Rushmoor parkrun to support him on ‘Boris Bikes’ on the day.
He began the attempt at 7am on Sunday morning at Old Kent Road as “to avoid as many people and cars as possible” - but on three occasions managed to lose his entourage of cyclists.
This proved only a temporary hiccup, however, and 13-and-a-half miles later, Alex completed the challenge shortly before 9am, comfortably within record time.
“It was amazingly good fun,” he told the Herald, adding his next step is to submit the evidence to Guinness.
So far, Alex’s Monopoly run has raised more than £2,000 for Step-by-Step, an Aldershot-based youth charity working to prevent homelessness, with his employer Global Processing Services matching any funds raised.
Alex explained that his relationship with Step-by-Step began in 2015 when he was made aware that runners were needed for fundraising events.
He said: “We are all really touched by the work they do in changing lives and getting young people back on their feet after tough starts. We attended the last two sleep-outs they have done and the guys are just so enthusiastic about what they do.”
Alex’s Monopoly run was not the first time he had attempted a world record. In June, he and four friends busked their way around the London Marathon dressed as the Beatles. They raised £11,000 for Step-by-Step, but sadly Guinness did not sanction the world record attempt.
