PETERSFIELD town councillors are concerned that legal costs are mounting as negotiations over the new lease for the Love Lane Pavilion continue to drag on.

At a meeting of the council on Monday town clerk Barbara Macken told councillors that their solicitors estimated the cost of the work so far was £3,250, with VAT and disbursements to be added.

The solicitor believed that 60 per cent of the cost was for work on the town junior football club lease and 40 per cent was on the lease for the nursery school at the pavilion.

Chairman of the finance and general purposes committee George Watkinson told the meeting: ÒThis has been going on for two years already, it could go on for another two or three years and what are the legal fees going to be then?Ó

He added: ÒIt has been dragging on because we cannot get the town juniors to talk to us half the time.Ó

Mr Watkinson told the meeting the town junior football club had been warned two years ago that it would have to pay its own legal fees for the negotiation of the lease.

But Brian Keefe said he believed the town council should express its concern at the escalating legal costs.
