IF you were on your bike on Sunday then Petersfield was the place to be. Cyclists thronged The Square early for seventh annual renewal of the Petersfield Ups and Downs, charity cycle ride. And it didn't disappoint with up to £8,000 being raised for Alton's Treloar's College and myriad charities. Leading the way in fundraising were around a dozen cyclists who formed a team from The Old Drum public house in Chapel Street who alone raised more than £1,000. "It was a great event with more than 450 riders taking part," said ride chairman James Pike, the vice-chairman of organisers Petersfield Round Table. "We had families and wives of members of the Round Table supporting us throughout the day with volunteer marshals on the ground," said a grateful James. With the High Street closed for the event, where it both started and finished, cyclists went as fair afield as West Meon and Finchdean on a variety of routes covering 20-30 miles, including an off-road course for the more intrepid riders. James thanked both the sponsors and everyone who had taken part.
