THE HOME Guard series of photographs both here and on our Facebook page has raised a lot of interest in the subject and I’ve had an appeal for readers’ help from Trevor Hudson.

Trevor contacted me in the hope the archive held a copy of a group photograph of the Kingham’s unit that appeared in this column during the 1980s.

Unfortunately, it seems to be one that missed my copy camera!

Incredibly, at about the same time this low-resolution image of the newspaper cutting appeared almost simultaneously on the Historic Farnham and Villages group, complete with a full list of those present.

“The picture on the left, brought into the Herald by an unidentified reader, shows a ‘combined force’ of men of two services (The Home Guard and the Special Constabulary) drawn from the staff of William Kingham and Sons, Farnham in September 1941.

“The site of the picture is probably Kingham’s headquarters and warehouse in The Hart, Farnham (now under development as a Presto supermarket) and those shown are, left to right, back row, W. C. Spence, L. J. Taylor, W. C. Stout, A. Harding, A. E. Silver, P. Stitchman, E. J. Scarff, W. Coles, J. S. Richardson, T. A. Parker, T. Johnson, A. J. Rogers and A. E. Cole; 3rd row, J. Smith, S. Towns, W. Poulter, A. J. Hole, H. V. Ellis, S. G. Smart, S. C. Binning, A. W. Archer, H. Bramley, C. R. Challis, C. Hawkins, F. Gregory and N. Hillyer; 2nd row, T. H. Green, W. H. Kemp, H. J. Corrigan, A. J. Fade, H. T. Barrett, J. W. F. Beagley, K. H. Kingham, R. A. Osborne, A. C. Towns, H. G. Mutch, R. A. Hart, E. A. Fry and K. A. Gordon; front row, F. L. Hewett, W. H. J. Painter, A. E. Lovelock, J. D. Menday, W. G. Bentick and A. N. Cotterill.”

However, Mr Hudson would still like to obtain a better-quality copy of the image as his grandfather is the Lance Corporal seated on the far right (K A Gordon, who was employed as a commercial traveller by the company).

So do you have a copy of the original print we can scan and add to Trevor’s family history and the Peeps archive? If so please let me know and I will pass it on.
