A PENSIONER knocked down by a car at the Royal Deer crossroads in Farnham town centre has called for urgent safety improvements to the junction “before someone is killed”.

John Harold, 77, was hospitalised with a cut to the face after the incident at around 4.30pm on Monday, November 30, which prompted police to close a lane of South Street for up to an hour.

He said he waited for the green man to indicate it was safe to cross, but as pedestrians began to walk across the road, a car suddenly moved forward and knocked him to the ground.

“The driver said he couldn’t see me and just drove off, but I could see him coming and knew he was going to hit me,” John told The Herald.

“Lots of people came to help me, and one very kind lady called Kethry stayed with me until the ambulance arrived.

“I was just lying there on the ground dazed, but also remember the police arriving and speaking to the driver of the car.”

John was taken to A&E by ambulance but escaped without any broken bones and his injuries were limited to a large graze on his face and some bruising.

However, he is worried that the next person knocked over at the junction will not be so fortunate and has appealed for Surrey County Council to take action.

He added: “This crossing is very unsafe. It’s so disorganised and people are so keen to push in and merge lanes. You can see the confusion on people’s faces.

“Everyone I have spoken to is of the same opinion - that it is an unreliable, not to say distressing, place to cross the road and more consideration should be given by drivers.”
