ALTON police are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman fell victim to a distraction burglary. The incident occurred in Station Road, Bentley at around 3 pm on Wednesday, February 2. The 79 year old opened her front door to a man who engaged her in conversation, enticing her out of her home. Meanwhile, a second offender entered the property and stole a sum of cash. The first offender is described as white, aged 18-22 and of slim build. He was clean shaven, wearing light-coloured clothes, sporting short hair and an Irish accent. Det Cons Jacqui Doran said: "Although the victim was unhurt in the incident she was left badly shaken and distressed by what happened."We want to speak to anyone who was in the Bentley area on that day who think they may have seen the men," said a police spokesman. "We would also like to hear from anyone who thinks they have been approached by these men or recognises the description. "I would urge people to be very careful before letting anyone they don't know into their home. People should always check for identification and call the police immediately if they have any doubts," he added Police are issuing the following advice to homeowners: • Check any canvassers' ID badges thoroughly and if they do not have one with a photograph refuse to let them in until you verify their identity with the organisation they purport to represent. • Elderly residents should keep chains on their doors while checking ID badges – don't feel bad about asking them to pass it through the door and, if they won't, just shut the door. • Most ID cards will have a number to ring for the company the person works for. Just say you will be a moment and ring that number. If the company does not recognise the member of staff then register their description and phone the police. • Most canvassers have 'the gift of the gab' but remember it is YOUR home and you are entitled to refuse entry to anyone you do not know. • Utility companies like gas, electric and water will have contact details for you anyhow, so if you believe the person at your door is not who they say they are, send them away with a request that they write to you instead. • If, for any reason, the person at your door tries to gain access by coercion then calmly ask them to leave. If they persist then either ring 999 or shout "Fire!" to get neighbours' attention. • Witnesses to the Bentley burglary or anyone who can help should contact Pc Gray on 0845 045 45 45 or call the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
