THE summer drink and drug drive campaign has been a busy one for the Surrey Constabulary’s roads policing officers with 80 arrests so far on the county’s roads for positive drink and drug tests, 45 per cent of these for drug driving.

As the campaign reaches its peak, the message to steer clear of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs appears to still be ignored by some motorists.

A lorry driver who drove the wrong way onto the A3 as an officer managed to stop oncoming traffic has already been sentenced for drink driving.

Mieczyslaw Glodzik, 40, of no fixed address was seen travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway of the A3 having driven up the off slip road at Burnt Common, at 3.20pm on Friday, May 25.

He gave a positive reading on a roadside breath test and was arrested. Back at Guildford police station he gave an evidential reading of 111 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath which is more than three times the limit of 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath.

He appeared at Guildford Crown Court on Friday, June 22, where he was sentenced to 20 weeks’ imprisonment.

Sergeant Phil Dix of the Surrey and Sussex roads policing unit said: “The latest results show that there are still people out there who are putting themselves and others at danger by driving when over the limit. We understand people want to enjoy themselves, especially in the summer months and particularly with a World Cup on but we just want to remind people you can either drink or drive, not both.

“If you’re prepared to drive under the influence of drink or drugs, prepare to face the consequences.”
