New figures show Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is the top performing region in the south-east for uptake of the flu vaccine, with more than 600,000 people already vaccinated.

But there are still many people aged over 65 or in a clinical risk group who are yet to come forward, and with flu cases rising earlier than usual they are being urged to get the vaccine now.

UK Health Security Agency data shows that the 2025-26 flu vaccine is already providing strong protection, despite the emergence of a new strain.

It has been shown to be between 70 and 75 per cent effective in preventing hospital attendance in children aged two to 17, and 30 to 40 per cent effective in adults. High protection among children helps reduce wider transmission in the community.

Dr Michele Legg, clinical lead for the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight vaccination programme, said:We are seeing more flu cases that are appearing earlier than usual.

“The vaccine is offering strong protection, especially for children, and remains the best way to reduce serious illness. If you’re eligible, please get vaccinated now to protect yourself and those around you. There are plenty of appointments available.”

It is safe to receive the flu and Covid vaccines at the same time. Immunity fades and strains evolve, so people vaccinated before still need the 2025-26 vaccine.

Many eligible people will be invited by their GP practice, but they can also book on the online National Booking System, by calling 119, or via the NHS App.

People unsure if they or their child has a condition that means they are eligible for the vaccination, or who need help with booking an appointment, can call the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight Covid vaccination helpline team on 0300 561 0018.
