PERFORMING arts students at Alton College are set to finish their academic year in style.
This month, the students will be putting on a performance of the schools’ edition of the long-running West End musical We Will Rock You.
The students, who are all studying for BTEC in performing arts, have a proven track record of putting on exciting and accomplished performances, their most recent being a choreographed performance of excerpts from Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker, an Auditions for Actors performance where they each performed three contrasting monologues, and their musical revue show New York, New York, all of which they performed over multiple nights to capacity audiences.
In order to promote We Will Rock You, the students’ most recent venture was to perform the title song from the musical to a large gathering of students in the college’s refectory. This performance was greeted with spontaneous applause by the impromptu audience of staff and students. It demonstrated the young singers’ capacity to perform with verve and dynamism and was a fantastic piece of publicity for their end-of-year show.
The musical, based on the songs of Queen, tells the story of a group of bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same.
Containing more than 25 songs by Queen, the show is action packed from beginning to end, according to a college spokesman.
The young performers are clearly excited for their upcoming show. As one student, leaving to pursue drama at university, said: “The musical We Will Rock You has presented many challenges for me as a performer as this is my first role as a main character.
“I have really enjoyed the build up to this performance and being able to see, from a first-hand experience, how a musical is put together.”
The performances take place in the college’s Wessex Arts Theatre from June 22-24 at 7.30pm each day.
