Peru challenge takes off!

The Peru ’99 challenge is about to take off! The culmination of 18 months of hard fund-raising and fitness training by a group of 24 students of Alton College sees them fly out to South America in two parties, the first on Thursday as The Herald went to press, and the second on Sunday. Led by English teacher Sean Redmond, the expedition is part of the World Challenge programme, which requires them to spend a week of their time in Peru doing community service work in a village. The rest of the four weeks overseas will be spent trekking through the Andres, visiting Inca sites and so forth. Each of the 18-year-olds will be required to lead the expedition for a day - the adults being with them only for emergencies - and living will be on a fairly basic tent-based level.
