WAVERLEY Council's 5,000 tenants are being lobbied to vote "no" to the transfer of ownership of their homes to the private sector by a pressure group under the banner of Tenants WATCH. With ballot forms due to arrive through tenants' letter boxes in the near future, Tenants WATCH members have been pre- empting the vote by circulating their own leaflet detailing the "cons" of transfer. Group co-ordinator Jerry Hyman, a Farnham tenant, will present a petition at a full Waverley Council meeting next Tuesday, bearing the signatures of tenants opposing transfer to Weyfold Community Homes, a registered social landlord created by the council. The petition reads: "We wish to avoid any further expenditure on promoting stock transfer - money that could be better spent on improving our homes. If balloted, we will vote 'NO' to stock transfer." "The first 28 signatures were hurriedly handed in by October 10 as required and came from just 27 doorsteps around Farnham (four were joint tenancies)," said Mr Hyman. "So there is a great chance of a resounding 'no' at the ballot, as tenants learn what they are being offered. "The petition is growing and the response is phenomenal; we are very thankful for the overwhelming support of tenants on the doorsteps," he added.
