BT Cellnet has withdrawn controversial plans to site a mobile phone mast on land at Chawton Park Bowls Club.

The decision is not thought to be due to pressure from local opposition groups, but because the company no longer has a need for a mast in that particular area.

According to club chairman Dick Goodeve, the reason remains unclear. ÒThe only thing I know is that the mast will not be coming to Chawton Park Road,Ó he said.

Opposed to the application due to fears for the safety of youngsters attending Guide, Brownie and playgroup meetings at the neighbouring Hawkins Headquarters, spokesman, Rod Mangan spoke of his relief.

He and wife, Brown Owl, Averil Mangan, were in the process of putting out posters advertising a public meeting, to be addressed by a phone company representative.

ÒItÕs not that we are against mobile phones - we all use them and know that the masts must go somewhere but this was the wrong place,Ó he said.
