SHOP keepers and customers alike are being warned to be vigilant after fake notes and commemorative coins were found to be circulating in the area.

In the past few weeks two counterfeit Scottish £20 notes were accepted at the Little Chef on the A3 in Liphook, while five commemorative £5 coins were accepted by the Jet garage in Bordon, despite the fact that they are not legal tender.

Pc Andy Brookes urged shop staff to scrutinise the money which customers give them, while shoppers have be asked to check their change.

ÒThere have been counterfeit notes in circulation again as well as the coins so people should be careful,Ó he said.

This is not the first time that counterfeit money has come into the area causing problems at shops and for the police.

Last summer a quantity of forged £10, £20 and £50 notes were found in Bordon, Lindford, Headley and Grayshott, forcing police officers to issue warnings and instructions on spotting the fake notes.

Anyone who comes across a fake note is asked to contact officers at Whitehill Police Station because if they try and pass the note on to someone else they will be committing a criminal offence.
