THE decision to move Waverley's local planning meetings to Godalming was made at the meeting of the development control committee on Monday.

Meetings of the southern area development control subcommittee will now be held at The Burys.

Haslemere Town Hall was no longer considered suitablefor the meetings because of lack of disabled access, lack of space and facilities for public speaking, and lack of electronic display facilities for plans.

Some councillors wanted the meeting to remain in Haslemere, and proposed alternatives including Haslemere Museum, Haslemere Hall, and the Haslewey Centre.

Others felt that The Burys answered all these requirements.

The council chamber at The Burys has microphone facilities with induction loop technology for the hard of hearing, is more accessible to people with disabilities, and has better display equipment for plans and presentations.

When the idea was put to the southern area sub committee in February, the vote was split down the middle. It was left to committee chairman Peter Isherwood to use his casting vote. The resulted in the recommendation for the move being put to Waverley's development control committee.

Some local residents felt the move to Godalming would "take local democracy out of the local area" as it could make meetings less accessible to the people most affected.

Mr Isherwood said at Monday's meeting: "I personally feel, having been to other venues in the area, that we could represent local people better by moving to a hall with more modern facilities, where officers can clearly explain what is being proposed.

"I visited the other venues with officers, and we are all of the opinion that we should move to The Burys. It would save money, which is very important in my eyes, and would also save officers' time."

David Inman added: "It's not really asking local people too much to go a little bit further for such excellent facilities."

John Robini said: "If members of the public feel strongly enough about an application, then they will make the trip to Godalming."

Brian Ellis agreed: "This is an exceptionally good idea. No one has mentioned one of the biggest selling points, which is the webcast facility. This will allow people to watch proceedings over the internet."

When the issue came to decision, all councillors present agreed unanimously to approve the recommendation.
