DEVELOPER Gleeson Homes has re-submitted plans for up to 254 new homes on the site of the Hogs Back Brewery’s hop garden in The Street, Tongham.

Gleeson was initially refused planning permission by Guildford Borough Council in October last year after councillors deemed, due to the development’s proximity to the A31 and A331, the “amenity and living environment of the proposed dwellings and areas of outdoor space would be poor, due to excessive noise, disruption and pollution”.

However, the developer has returned with a near-identical application - albeit with additional mitigation to protect homeowners against noise levels from the Hog’s Back and Blackwater Valley.

The application, submitted to both Waverley and Guildford councils as it straddles the borough boundaries, proposes building the homes on a 32-acre greenfield site forming part of the Manor Farm estate known as ‘The Tongham Triangle’.

A large swathe of the site is currently occupied by the Hog’s Back Brewery’s hop garden which was only planted in 2014 with hops including Fuggles, Cascade, and the rare Farnham White Bine.

Guildford borough residents can view and comment on the plans online at www.guildford.gov.uk/searchforaplanningapplication by searching for application reference 17/P/01193.

Residents living in Waverley can do so by going to the website at www.waver

ley.gov.uk/planning and searching for reference WA/2017/1050.

An appeal against both Guildford and Waverley council’s refusal of Gleeson’s initial plans is pending a decision by the Government planning inspectorate.
