Plans for a new leisure centre in Farnborough town centre have been approved, subject to a legal agreement, paving the way for work to begin in early summer.
The centre will include a 25-metre swimming pool, a learner pool with a moveable floor, a gym with more than 100 fitness stations and power-assisted equipment for less mobile users, studio space, a spin studio, soft play area and café.
It will be built on the Queensmead car park, with external features including a play area, landscaping, cycle and mobility parking, and a replacement car park on the former Pinehurst site.
Rushmoor Borough Council’s development management committee approved the plans on Wednesday, March 11, with final authority delegated to the chairman and executive head of property and growth once legal agreements with Hampshire County Council are confirmed.
The decision is the final step before construction starts towards the end of June, with completion and fit-out expected in late 2027.
It follows the council’s cabinet approving the appointment of a development partner to build the centre and car park, and leisure operator Everyone Active to run the new facility and the council’s existing sites from April 1.
The early appointment allows Everyone Active to help shape the final design and fit-out. As part of its bid, the company will also invest in a new splash pad at the Lido site to increase its appeal and attract more visitors.
The splash pad, expected to be built in 2029, is proposed to be included in the Lido entry price. A new health and wellbeing programme will also be introduced to support residents’ fitness.
Cllr Sophie Porter, deputy leader and cabinet member for healthy communities and active lives, said: “We know how much residents want a new leisure centre and we have been firm in our commitment to delivering one that would provide the best mix of facilities while being affordable and therefore achievable.
“Planning permission is the final hurdle we needed before we can press ahead, and we are absolutely thrilled that the Development Management Committee has approved the proposal. We are looking forward to seeing the new leisure centre taking pride of place in the town centre, offering an accessible and contemporary facility for our residents to use and enjoy.”
The first stage of work will see the Queensmead car park close and be hoarded off in late June. During construction, the main town centre car park will be The Meads multi-storey.
