A telecommunications firm has turned to the planning inspector after plans for a digital totem in Farnham were rejected by Waverley Borough Council.

Plans for a BT Street Hub Unit in front of 14 East Street were opposed by Farnham Town Council in May as they felt approval could set a precedent and lead to a flurry of similar applications.

The application was later rejected by WBC primarily on visual grounds as they felt the advertising totem would appear as an “alien and incongruous feature”.

It was also felt the hub could obstruct visibility and would be a minor harm on surrounding heritage assets.

Safia Rana-Jaswal has appealed on behalf of the BT Group with people having until August 18 to pass comment, as it will be determined on the basis of written representations.
