A FINAL decision on whether a popular shortcut to Haslemere High Street can be made an official right of way, will be taken following a public inquiry in November..
There was an outcry in February last year, when a six-feet high metal fence was erected by the landowners, blocking the entrance to the alleyway from College Hill.
The situation was complicated, however, because it transpired that although the shortcut had been used for many years, it had not been registered as a public right of way and so its obstruction was not illegal.
Surrey County Council made a modification order last November for a new public right of way, footpath 604, from Lloyds Bank to College Hill but it went to appeal because an objection was received from the landowners before the December 30 deadline.
Now a two-day inquiry has been scheduled to be held at Haslemere Museum, starting at 10am, on Wednesday, November 30.
Anyone who wishes to speak, give evidence or contribute in any way should attend on the first day and notify the inspector in advance whether or not they can attend.
The effect of the order if confirmed by the planning inspector, will be to add it as a footpath to the definitive map.
The Secretary of State will contact everyone who has made an objection or representation. Queries about the inquiry should be referred to Jean McEntee on 0303 4445437 quoting reference FPS/B3600 /7/110 – email [email protected]
