OBJECTORS to the Brightwells regeneration scheme in Farnham have created a scale model of the long-delayed redevelopment of land south of East Street.
David Howell, chairman of The Farnham Society’s planning committee, says the model has been created to give a true impression of the development’s “overbearing” impact on Grade II listed Brightwell House and the proposed new town square.
It features wooden replicas of Brightwell House and many of the proposed new buildings, with the remaining new buildings represented by white blocks reflecting the latest amendments to the scheme.
Mr Howell said: “I had always questioned the accuracy of the images that the ‘fly through’ on the Waverley Borough Council website suggested, especially the brightness and openness of the ‘Brightwells Yard’ and wondered what the true impact of the Crest Nicholson proposals would be. Also, why Waverley had never produced a model to illustrate their scheme.
“An outline model of the scheme commissioned some years ago by The Farnham Society showed only Brightwell House and the enormous adjacent D8 building (cinema, car parking, retail shops and dwellings). The D8 building would, as far as I could determine, be the largest building in Farnham and its four-storey structure the highest by a long way.
“It was agreed that I could add ‘blocks’ to represent the other proposed buildings to the model to try and illustrate the size and impact that the whole CNS proposals would have on the immediate area.
“The model, which allows the height of the proposed buildings to be represented approximately, demonstrates their actual scale, something I had expected, but not to the degree it illustrates.”
The Farnham Society, as a leading member of the Farnham Interest Group (FIG), is currently involved in a judicial review claim against Waverley’s handling of the Brightwells scheme. A preliminary hearing into FIG’s legal standing is set to take place in the High Court on January 31, 2017.
