A retirement complex and a nursery could be built on the last plot of land at the former Molson Coors brewery site in Alton.
EQ Care Alton Ltd has submitted a planning application for a care home, supported living homes and a children’s nursery on the Courage Avenue site to East Hampshire District Council.
This news provides clarity for Medstead resident Geoff Beale, who asked the Herald: “What is happening at the old brewery site? I know nothing would be the answer, but why? The builders appear to have left at least a third of the brownfield site boarded up and derelict.”
Geoff had similar concerns about progress on the landscaped river walk connecting Alton town centre to Kings Pond.
Hannah Robbins, East Hampshire District Council’s community development and engagement officer, said: “In regards to the river walk, CALA will be on site this week clearing the river and doing some works.
“There will also be an artwork installation going in along the river, made from materials from the old brewery site. Permission from the Environment Agency is being sought before those can be installed.”
In its planning statement, EQ Care Alton Ltd said: “The redevelopment of the former Molson Coors brewery site has been a long-standing aspiration for Alton, reflecting its prominent location within the town and its potential to contribute significantly to its growth and improvement.
“EQ Care has acquired the freehold interest in this final parcel of land. The intention is to develop this parcel in a manner that reverts closer to the original approach, comprising a traditional care home, alongside additional self-contained supported living units, in addition to a children's nursery.
“This approach responds to identified local needs and preference for traditional care provision.”
The application is on the council website under reference EHDC-26-0339-FUL.
