FEARS that The Cherry Tree pub in Rowledge could be lost forever have been reinforced after a formal bid to convert the inn to a four-bedroom home was submitted to Waverley Borough Council.

The 17th century inn pulled its last pint in March, just weeks before brewing giant Greene King completed its sale to Badshot Lea-based developer D’zign Build Ltd.

The new owners initially applied to convert the pub into offices, later withdrawing this application. However, D’zign Build Ltd is now seeking permission to change The Cherry Tree’s legal use from public house (Class A4) to dwelling (Class C3).

In a design and access statement accompanying the application, the developers’ planning agent states a chance of use “will enhance the sustainability of the building” and provide more housing “in an area of high demand”.
