SINCE the devastating fire in June 2014 that ripped through the historic Church of St Peter’s at Ropley, destroying all but the skeleton, the Parochial Church Council has been drawing up plans for an ambitious project to build a vibrant new church at the heart of the village.

For centuries the focal point of the local community, Parochial Church Council members have been working alongside architect John Alexander, of Alexander Designs, and other agencies to create a church building that will not only reflect the past but will provide all the facilities needed for future generations.

Parochial Church Council spokesman Norma Day said: “This project has now taken a huge leap forward and we are now pleased to announce that, with all the necessary permissions in place, we are ready to move on to the rebuild phase and launch the St Peter’s Appeal Fund, with the initial fundraising target set at £500,000.”

Two special events have been organised to launch the appeal, where guests can hear more about this “amazing and exciting project”.

The launch takes place next Friday (February 16) at Ropley village hall, starting at 7.30pm, when the Parochial Church Council is inviting anyone with an interest in St Peter’s, both past and present, along to enjoy a glass of wine and nibbles, and to hear what is planned. This event will be attended by the Bishop of Basingstoke, the Right Reverend David Williams.

A second event will take place the next day, on Saturday, February 17, at 3pm at the village hall, when the plans will be revealed over tea and cake.

Mrs Day said: “The organisers are very aware that there are huge numbers of people who no longer live in the village but have links with the church through baptisms, confirmations, weddings, funerals, or past involvement with the church organisations such as the choir, Sunday school, bell ringing, youth club etcetera and everyone is welcome.”
