A NEW planting plan for Petersfield has finally been agreed, despite concerns some flowerbeds could end up vandalised. The town council commissions planting in a number of different beds around the town, including sites at Dragon Street, Sussex Road, the Bell Hill roundabout and outside the Festival Hall. Last week contractor Philip Voice Ltd presented the grounds committee with a selection of designs for the new season. Although members sup-ported the plans, they feared decorative rocks on the proposed College Street bed may be hurled onto the road or through windows. There were even fears of a repeat of last year, when thieves made off with bags of plants. At a meeting of the town council last week, Brian Dutton supported the planting scheme but said the rock features would either need to be scrapped altogether or be anchored down. He told the committee: "I propose that we accept this - except for the rocks. I believe they would be used for vandalism and thrown into the road for cars to run over them. They will be thrown through windows unless we put big anchors on them." Contracts manager Peter Jones added: "Last year I saw actually someone down there with a carrier bag as if it was a self-service flower store."
