Sir, – I hear with distress that a planning application has been received to knock down the Bat and Ball at Farnham and build three houses on the site. "Ridiculous" we all cry but what frightens me is that Waverley might just by blind enough to pass it.

After all, was it not they who allowed the car park of the then quiet Sandrock to be developed? What a great idea. Now that the pub has become busy the road outside is a nightmare.

The Bat and Ball is special and unique. The building itself may not be listed but the pub is a treasure, which needs protection on behalf of the local community.

The only people who can provide that protection is the local council and this is why I am concerned.

Where else can a family enjoy the quiet beauty of the Bourne Valley, away from the dangers of traffic, whilst being offered such unique culinary delights as home-made curries in hand-crafted iron pots?

Where can the children have space to play, whatever the weather, and Dad enjoy a range of real ales from all over the country and even a draught, imported, pure-brewed German lager?

I am sure I will find empathy with parents everywhere, who sacrifice the quality of the food and drink they consume when out for the sake of the children whenever they go to a "child-friendly" pub.

The owners know they can get away with serving frozen and fried everything and bland beer because there is no-where else to go.

Please, Waverley, do not let the developers take away this wonderful oasis in a desert of blandness.
