SOME 3,000 people crowded through the gates at the Great All England Horse Ploughing Championships and Show of Heavy Horse, which made a welcome return to Alton on Sunday after 28 years.
Organised by the Southern Counties Heavy Horse Association, this was the biggest event of its kind in the UK, bringing together some of the finest ploughmen, women and ploughing teams from as far afield as County Durham, the West Country, Penzance and East Anglia. And it produced some worthy champions.
